Believing is the "key ingredient" to salvation. The remaining steps are commands to be followed only if belief is present. Otherwise, obedience to the remaining commandments is an exercise in futility; without belief, they mean nothing. You must believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and that he came to earth and voluntarily died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, then arose from the dead in order that we may have eternal life.
