Every Careless Word--by Kimberly B. Southall

We all say things that we really don't mean from time to time. Sometimes we say things we don't mean when we're angry. And sometimes it is just because we don't think about what we are going to say before we say it. But these careless words are very serious to God. Jesus said:

34. . . For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. 35The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned. Matthew 12:34-37 (NIV)

Can you imagine giving an account to God for every careless word you say? That's not a pleasant thing to think about is it? But it will happen. That's why we must be very careful about the words we use.

There are several ways to sin with our words. We can sin by lying. We can sin by teasing others or by saying something to hurt someone's feelings. We can sin by saying filthy words or phrases that should never be spoken. We can sin by gossiping or spreading rumors. We can even sin by speaking when we should be quiet.

We should give our words careful thought before we speak them. Jesus always did, and He wants us to do the same. Jesus' words always came from His heart, and none of them were carelessly spoken. Likewise, Jesus taught that what we say is a reflection of what we hold in our hearts. That is why we must be very careful about what we say. Remember, we will have to account to God for every careless word.
